Womens: SWLC - Frome 1-2 Sherbourne

Frome scorer: Didymus

POM: Brant

Frome Town Woman welcomed Sherborne town ladies to Badgers Hill in the 1st round of the South west regional league cup in what was anticipation to be their toughest test to date. Before the start of the game players, mascots, officials and the large supporting crowd gave a rousing minutes applause to remember and celebrate the life of Lauren Rose Mead who sadly passed away last month at such a tender age.

The game started with Sherborne passing the ball around confidently but Frome’s players thwarted any play in or around their penalty area with some great tackles and blocks and on 10 minutes the home keeper Restorick made an important double save to keep Frome on level terms. Frome began to grow into the game as Christmas and Petteford up top worked hard but the visitors defence looked a tuff nut to crack but after a scare on 20 minutes when Frome’s crossbar got grazed an inspired change by Justin saw Didymus come on and within minutes broke the deadlock with a diving header which left the visitors keeper no chance.

Frome matched Sherborne’s efforts across the whole pitch as they tried to get back into the game and must of thought they were going into the break 1 up, but right on 45 minutes Sherborne’s striker wriggled herself half a yard of space and let fly a unstoppable strike to put her team back on level terms.

The 2nd half got under way with both teams working hard to add further goals to the game and Sherborne found their striker free in Frome’s penalty area only to be denied by Restorick bravely diving at her feet to smother her effort. Frome pushed forward but couldn’t find that final ball to release their forwards and were stung again by Sherborne as their midfielder struck well into the bottom corner from just outside the box on 65 minutes. Frome to their credit were still in the game and spent the last 20 mins piling on the pressure to try to grab an equaliser but Sherborne stood firm to the end and held on for the win 2-1.

The player of the game was a tough one to call with good displays from the whole team back to front, a full 90 mins from Minty, Didymus’s goal but Brant took the honours for her impressive defending and passing play from left back.

A special thank you to Lauren’s family and friends who supported the women today our hearts are all with you, also a huge thanks to all the mascots today you were stars.

Next week we’re back at home to take on neighbours Trowbridge, come along and show your support off.
