Warminster Town 1-3 Frome Town

The 25/26 campaign started with a trip down to Weymouth Street, where Warminster Town hosted the first of seven pre-season fixtures for the Robins.

Manager Danny Greaves had been a busy man this summer, with nine new signings entering Badgers Hill, four of whom started the first half’s affair.

Pick of the bunch, David Duru, formerly of Cribbs and Taunton was quick to show off his talent with an assist in just six minutes. A perfectly-timed pass coming from Zak Drew on the right-hand side, finds Duru, which gave both him and Ferris a 2-on-1 scenario. Ferris received the ball with only the goalkeeper in his sights, closing him down. The forward calmly took the ball past the man between the sticks to slot home into an open net.

It only took another 15 minutes for the visitors to extend the lead. A well-worked movement from the left with Sam Heal passing sideways towards Hopkins. He struck the ball into the bottom-left corner with deflections from both the Warminster defender and the goalkeeper, who did get a hand on the shot, but just dived too late.

The first drinks break of the evening was taken when the home side’s tactical change started to click. All of a sudden, a controversial handball from Seb Tylek gave a free-kick in a dangerous area, just outside the 18-yard box. An important save was needed by Tylek in order to keep the scoreline the same.

This momentum switch really put Frome under pressure heading into the half-time break, leading to another free kick, 25 yards from the goal. This time it was not struck as well as the previous effort. However, an unfortunate bobble right in front of the Polish keeper led to a deflection into the back of the net, which gave the Maltmen a lifeline in this fixture.

The second half brought nine changes, including five trialists, who looked like players who were in need of impressing the gaffer in the remaining 45 minutes.

There was not much to separate the two teams for the first 20 minutes after the break until the Robins doubled their lead for the second time this evening. This time, one of the five trialists that featured, No. 12 was put through on goal where a toe-poke finish was enough to trickle into the bottom-right corner.

The next five or so minutes' action was all heading towards Warminster’s goal. With one of the new signings, Harry Lucas, hitting the frame of the woodwork just shy of the 70-minute mark.

From here onwards, it was as though the home side had some anger left in their tired bodies. This was shown by an unusual sending off from their No. 10 for a reckless challenge on one of the trialists that evening.

The full-time whistle was blown with some valuable minutes on the books for the players' fitness. It is fair to say that this was a very unfriendly friendly in South-West Wiltshire.
