Westbury United vs. Frome Town: Preview

Steve Jupp, BA11's Club Historian, contemplates a cross-county clash as we visit the White Horse Men this evening.

Pre-season continues apace for the Scarlet Runners on Tuesday evening with a short trip to near neighbours Westbury United.

It will be their first visit back to Meadow Lane since a certain night in February when that late, late piece of Jono magic, the highlight of a season of many special moments, capped a fabulous fightback and gave supporters an 'I was there' memory that will last a lifetime.

But that was then and now all focus must be on gearing up for the big fast-approaching Southern League Premier Division opener at Gosport Borough on August 10th. The Robins' best form of their warm-up schedule to date came in that clinical second half showing at Clevedon a week ago and if that can be replicated when the real thing is up and running, supporters will not want for entertainment.

The White Horse Men, now about to commence their third campaign in the Southern League, will be looking to improve upon a final position of 17th last term in which Frome did the double over them (3-1 and 3-2), and their own pre-season programme has gone well, scoring 20 goals in five unbeaten games including a 6-1 victory over National League South Chippenham Town. Their campaign kick-off is a week earlier than the Robins' with an FA Cup tie against Hamble while their league opener brings a home contest with Cornish new boys Helston.

There are not too many downsides to promotion, but one of them is the loss of derbies against the likes of Westbury and Melksham. Those four fixtures last season attracted a combined crowd figure of over 3,000 and while a July friendly will generate nowhere near the same intensity, particularly off the field, it's still nice to keep in touch with the neighbours.

If you need more build-up, have a listen to the latest episode of BA11's podcast as Chairman, Derek Graham, takes the mic ahead of our step up to the Southern Premier before play-off final hero, Matt Wood, discusses a return to his former club.

Now the fixture list is out, don't miss the chance to take advantage of our Season Tickets which you can secure on the FanBase app (link below) alongside admission to our pre-season friendlies at home against Bath City and Swansea City U21s!

There is a lot to like about the new podcast hosted by Steve McCarthy and Zeb Baker-Smith.

As co-hosts, Steve & Zeb, dovetail seamlessly as they interview current players, James Ollis, Warren Maidment and Matt Wood.  The new additions to the playing squad, Albie Hopkins, Marcas Day and Jayden Neilson also get an opportunity to tell us what attracted them to play for the Robins during the coming…
