Recognising our younger players and the player pathway partnership with Frome Town United FC.

As the team approach their last few games of the season, in what has been a period of change and transition for the squad, we take a few minutes to focus on the younger players at Frome Town Women.

Women’s football can be frustrating in that when players get injured or unexpectedly decide to take break midway through the season, we can’t just go to the market and buy in new players. Frome Town Women Manager and Head Coach Ben has worked really hard to partner with Frome Town United not only to increase the opportunities for Girls to play football in Frome but to develop the pathway that enables girls to develop their football skills to a high standard and potentially play for Frome Town Women when they are 16+.

As time of writing, just under half of the current squad are aged 16 – 18, with eight players fitting into this age bracket. At 16, the we currently have four players in the squad, who are all local, following the strong pathway Frome Town Women has built over the last couple of years with Frome Town United (FTU), Frome’s junior football club.

Like FTW, FTU are also an entirely volunteer run club, which provides football for around 700 children in and around Frome every week. We are delighted to be able to continue our strong partnership with FTU, giving female players the chance to develop into adult football by being able to train with the team, and take part in matches from the age of 16.

Twins Alice and Lucy Owen, along with Iris Eden and Ellie Cheeseman have all signed for Frome Town Women this season and become regular on the training pitch with Alice, Lucy and Iris all getting plenty of game time in their first season with the Women’s team, whilst continuing to play weekly for FTU Under 16 Girls. Ellie currently plays with Frome Town United Under 16 boys on a Sunday afternoon but we look forward to being able to give her match opportunity as soon as we can.

The younger players have shown, once again, that our talented juniors can make the transition to women’s football, putting in some great performances. Most notably, Lucy Owen’s Player of the Match performance away to Weymouth a couple of weeks ago.

We also wanted to give a big shout out to Kitt Whisstock and Martha Wyatt who joined us last season as junior players and have both now become mainstays of the squad. Martha is a regular on the left wing bringing strength and skill, while Kitt has become a regular in the team’s defence with her determination and athleticism.

At 18, we also have Leah Ham and Elicia Rumens, signed this season from Melksham Ladies, who have brough fantastic energy and skill into the team and also now become regulars on the teamsheet for match days.

This season may have presented many challenges for Frome Town Women, but the growth of our young players bodes well for the future of the team and for football in Frome, and with 110 girls now playing football in Frome every week at FTU, the future looks really positive for bringing through more players from our local community into Frome Town Women.
