Street vs Frome Town: Match Preview

Steve Jupp, BA11's very own Club Historian, previews our friendly visit to the other side of the county.

Pre-season games are coming thick and fast for the Robins and, on Tuesday evening, they pay a visit to The Tannery Ground, the home of Western Leaguers Street FC.

Bradley Peters scored a late winner from the spot at Street

It's easy to forget that The Cobblers, who achieved a mid-table position last term, were a Southern League outfit as recently as 2019 when they finished a creditable eighth in their only campaign in Division One South only for off field problems to cause them to voluntarily revert back to Step Five.

Friendlies aside, Frome last met Street in a competitive fixture ten years ago in a Somerset Premier Cup tie at The Tannery, eventually triumphing 3-1 after going a goal behind thanks to a double from debutant Aidan Kirby and a stoppage time strike from the boot of Johnny Oliver.

Perhaps the highest profile clash between the two sides was that FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie back in 2001,

which was televised live by the BBC (well, some of it!). The early kick-off and opening couple of minutes were broadcast to the nation on Football Focus, nipping back now and then for updates while the goals were shown later in the day on Final Score.

And what a goal to break the deadlock of a no-quarter-given, bruising encounter when Jon Miller fired Frome spectacularly in front from thirty yards only for the home side to level through a Gareth Morgan volley. A couple of minutes from time, however, Tony Pounder was felled in the box and up stepped Bradley Peters to convert cooly from the spot to seal a 2-1 win for the Robins..

Don't miss the other home friendlies coming up!
