Frome Town battled hard to earn a point away at Hungerford.
The result brings an end to a run of four straight losses, and a much improved performance to go with it, which now gives us something to go and build on.
After the Crusaders put nine past Plymouth Parkway and we shipped five to Havant & Waterlooville just last Saturday, you may have thought there would be plenty of goals in this one, however the Robins strong and most importantly consistent shape and structure made it difficult for the hosts, who were no doubt frustrated throughout the 90.
The game started very balanced with both teams just checking each other out, Jacob Bancroft had a go from outside the box which turned out to be a comfortable save for Isaac Finch.
There certainly wasn’t a whole lot of chances in the first third of the game and that’s down to the discipline in shape of Danny Greaves men on and off the ball, although struggling to hook it up in attack at times, the home side had a free-kick which sailed well over the bar and in to the stand behind the goal, the first real sign of frustrating for them.
The BA11 side then had a half chance of their own, James Ollis won a free-kick down the left, with cross being floated it, it was punched but only as far as Ethan Vaughan who attempted to curl on from around the edge of the box, but caused no real issues for Ryan Clarke who caught it with ease.
The Berkshire based side then had a flurry of chances late on in the first half, Finch made a strong stop in the 43rd minute down low to his left, before a near disaster where he was beaten to the ball by a Hungerford player who challenged him fairly winning the ball which trickled by and off the post.
Dawid Regula then spun and caught a left footed half volley cleanly which sailed past the post before Louis McGrory dragged a shot straight at Finch, all these chances coming in about five minutes, but making it through to half-time unscathed was massively important.
The second-half was a similar story to the first but once again Frome defended superbly, they had some defending to do in the 55th minute when a ball was sent across the box, behind all the Frome player’s as they were running back, it arrived to Elis Watts who had all the sting taken out his shot by a Frome body, which allowed Finch to make a simple save.
Arguably, Frome then had their best chance of the game on the hour mark, a simple long ball from the keeper was headed on by Ollis, through to Marcus Day who got around his man and latched on to the ball, unfortunately he snatched at his effort and sent it well wide.
Two minutes later Finch pulled off a finger tip save to keep things level, the defenders wanted a flag but it didn’t come as Regula raced through smashing an effort high and towards the near post, which Finch managed to keep out.
There wasn’t a whole lot of action between the 63rd minute and the full-time whistle, Frome did well at slowing the game down and not letting the hosts gain an real momentum at any point and in the end it’s a solid point on the road.
There’s now a ten day break before our next game, where we will host Havant & Waterlooville in the FA Trophy third round qualifying and we’d love to see as many of you there as possible.

The match between Hungerford Town and Frome Town in which it ended 0-0 epitomizes how stiff competition can be, where the two teams fought to outdo each other but could not manage to hit the back of the net. In a way, just like this match, writing a thesis requires tenacity and effort. Sometimes you hit obstacles, and it feels like you are in a stalemate. That's an excellent result all things considered. A clean sheet will be an enormous boost to the moral of the side and hopefully we can build from here . Our lack of goals is the next thing that needs urgent attention?
Still, from tiny acorns...!
