Steve Jupp, BA11's Club Historian, takes a look at this weekend's assignment!
Frome Town hit the road on Saturday as they bid to bounce back from some forgettable
performances and results with trip into deepest Hampshire to face Havant and Waterlooville.
Both sides suffered FA Cup exit last weekend, the Hawks conceding late goals in going
down 3-2 at Worthing, and both have just one Southern Premier League win to their name
so far this season. The difference is, Havant are one of just two unbeaten clubs in the
Division at this early stage (Basingstoke being the other) and have drawn their other five
fixtures, all by the same 1-1 scoreline.
Formed as recently as 1998 following a merger between Havant Town and Waterlooville FC,
they were founder members of National League South in 2004. Successive titles (Isthmian
Premier 2017 and National League South 2018) brought them their one and only campaign
at the top level of the non-league game and after a further five years at Step Two,
relegation last term brings them into Frome’s sphere of influence.
Many will recall their fabulous FA Cup run of 2007-08 when, after overcoming York City,
Notts County and Swansea (having been drawn away to all three), they were handed a
dream Fourth Round tie at Anfield where they actually twice went ahead before Liverpool
eventually ran out 5-2 winners in front of an enthralled crowd of over 42,000.
The Robins and the Hawks have met just the once before, an FA Cup Second Qualifying
Round tie in September 2010 at the impressive Westleigh Park, and although at the time
Frome were two levels lower than their hosts, they put on a determined and wholehearted
display in going down by the only goal.
Danny Greaves’ 250th game as manager was marked last week by a presentation from the
Supporters Club and it is appropriate to mention a couple of stalwarts from the back-room
team who have served the club for just as long. Coach Simon Monks and goalkeeping coach
Alan Bull both came on board in the summer 2018 and their efforts behind the scenes often
go unnoticed.
When the Scarlet Runners last ventured along the M27 some six weeks ago, they returned
with a resounding result from Gosport. A similar performance will lift the spirits of the BA11
faithful which have taken quite a knock this past fortnight.
