Frome Town Women 2 - 0 Middlezoy Rovers Ladies

Frome Town Women progressed to the quarter finals of Somerset Women’s Junior Cup with a solid win over Middlezoy, taking their current run of wins to four on the bounce.

In the second of four home games in a row, in front of another strong crowd, Frome Town took control of the game from the start making early progress down the left wing through Wyatt and Harris to force an early corner kick from which Frome were able to take an early lead, in the 4th minute; when a low flighted corner from Bristow found captain Underhill at the near post, facing away from goal, only to deftly flick an expertly taken backheel over the visitors’ goalkeeper to give Frome Town Women an early lead. A fantastic start for Frome from their captain. Middlezoy looked to come back in to the game straight away with a shot from range which was comfortably collected by in form goalkeeper Restorick.

With the visitors looking to play high and long to their strikers, Frome’s back line of Didymus, Ratcliffe and Perkins settled into the game, absorbing through balls and using Restorick’s excellent footwork to keep possession and work the ball back up the field. It was another strong display by Frome’s backline, leading to their third clean sheet in four games.

Building on strong foundations, Frome looked to push forward and build their lead. Excellent triangular passing on the left hand side of the pitch between Bristow and Wyatt, supported by Underhill and Regler, enabled Frome to stretch the Middlezoy backline while Peet and Harris made runs in behind the Middlezoy back four.

In 23rd minute, just such a ball led Harris being clean through on goal, deftly lobbing the Middlezoy keeper for a second goal only for the flag to rule the goal offside in what looked to be a very, very tight call when Harris looked to be in line with the Middlezoy centre-back. As half-time approached, Frome continued to create chances, with Underhill, Hill and Thorner-Atkinson all testing the Middlezoy goalkeeper.

On the stroke of half time, Harris deservedly got her goal when Bristow yet again swung in a great corner which was flicked on by Perkins for Harris to smash the ball past the goalkeeper to give Frome Town a 2-0 lead going into the break.

In the second half, Frome Town continued their domination in midfield with the trio of Bristow, Underhill and Regler, all linking up really well throughout the game with amazing teamwork, to feed Wyatt and Hill on the wings. Frome continued to create chances Wyatt firing a cracking ball into Hill who fired wide. Soon after, Harris fired just wide of the post after connecting well from a through ball from Bristow.

In midfield, Regler showed tremendous drive and energy across the pitch, working hard to close down and Middlezoy advances, winning the ball back to play forward and also supporting in attack, in and around the box. A superb all round performance that was awarded with player of the match. On the hour mark Hill had a mini rest when Crowther was brought on for her home debut to bring energy and pace to the right hand side.

Middlezoy tried to break out and create chances, but Restorick was quick off her line to read through balls and cut out the danger. Going forward, Frome carried on creating chances with Thorner-Atkinson trying from range and Underhill both firing wide of the post. Chances continued to come for Frome as the game drew to a close, notably when Thorner-Atkinson received the ball unexpectedly from a pass out from Middlezoy goalkeeper only for her shot to go just wide of the post, but Frome were not able to add to their lead and the game finished 2-0 Frome.

Frome now go into the quarter-final draw for the competition, waiting to see who they will face. Meanwhile, in the League, AEK Boco’s shock defeat away at Weston-Super-Mare Ladies, 6-5 means that Frome Town Women remain on top of their League. The team head back to the training pitch this week to prepare for their home League game vs Stockwood Wanderers, next Sunday at Badger’s Hill.
