Frome Town vs. Cribbs: Match Preview

Steve Jupp, BA11's Club Historian, talks us through an unprecedented achievement for our opponents ahead of our start in the league.

Pre-season has felt like an endless slog, but the big day is upon us at last as Badgers Hill stages the first game of a new campaign against newcomers Cribbs FC.

The Robins saved the best till last with that five goal salvo in the final friendly at North Leigh and they will be eager to bring that kind of form into their Southern League opener.

Danny Greaves has freshened up his squad with the gradual addition of new faces over the summer and a warm Badgers Hill welcome goes to Joe Budd, Thomas Duffin, Ben Griffith, Ross Staley, Caleb Summerfield, Will Taylor and Matt Wood (who impressed in a couple of games on loan last term).

Frome will be hoping to extend a remarkable record which stretches back some twenty years; on the first day of the season in 2003, they went down disappointingly 2-0 at Odd Down in the Western League, but have not lost an opening day fixture since. That's a run of fifteen wins and four draws, can any club in the country match or better that?

Visitors Cribbs will be creating their own piece of history too, this being their first ever Southern League fixture following promotion last term as Hellenic League Premier Division champions. In recent years they have risen through the Gloucester County and Western Leagues before a lateral move to the Hellenic in 2021.

Their last visit to the Hill, as recent as three years ago, surely falls into the rare category of 'friendlies that are still remembered'. Shell-shocked Town found themselves three down before a Rex Mannings strike reduced the arrears right on half-time. Further goals from Mannings again, Matt Smith and Jack Witcombe completed a thrilling 4-3 fightback. Are we in for another seven-goal thriller on Saturday?
