Frome Town were on the receiving end of a last-gasp winner against Poole Town, as Jamie Whisken snatched all three points for the visitors in stoppage time.
Centre-half Matt Wood thought he grabbed the Robins a deserved point in the 90th minute, with a back-post header, his second of the game, before the late heartbreak.
It was a performance that certainly didn’t reflect the result, with the hosts being the better side for most of the game and would have more than deserved a point from the game.
Injuries have been piling up and that was reflected today, with just four substitutes available, although there was good news in the sense both Rex Mannings and Albie Hopkins returned from their injuries, with the former starting and the latter having to settle for a spot on the bench.
The hosts started the game on the front foot, putting the Dolphins’ defence under heavy pressure, with George Rigg and Zak Drew combining down the right to win the ball back in the box and win a corner.
The hard work early on was undone in the 10th minute however, when a corner which was straight on top of Kyle Phillips was spilled by the keeper, with Josh Staunton scoring the easiest goal he’ll ever get.
Frome struggled to settle back in to the game straight away, having to weather a storm from the South Coast side, but battled through and had openings through Zak Drew down the right.
In the 25th minute, he skipped past his man and had acres of space to run into and a three vs two scenario. Instead, he played it inside and that gave the Poole defenders enough time to get back and prevent James Ollis being played through.
Drew was at the forefront of the attack once again, as Ollis slipped him through, offside appeals were turned down, but Drew could only curl a shot which was comfortable for Plain in goal.
Marcus Day was the latest to be played through, on his return to the starting XI, he had time and space but couldn’t hit the target, with his effort clattering into the side netting.
Phillips then more than made up for his earlier mistake, denying Tobias Holmes one-on-one, with a smart save low to his left.
Frome then bagged a deserved equaliser on the stroke of half-time, through Wood, who met a corner with the sweetest of side-foots guiding it into the bottom corner, a striker’s finish from the centre-half.
The second half was highly competitive and the BA11 side thought they took the lead in the 51st minute as Drew was played through and smashed past the keeper, with the linesman’s flag denying him, even though it looked ever so tight.
It was back and forth from then on, but it was the visitors who took the lead in the 74th minute a freak goal as another set piece cannoned off Ollis’ head and looped up and on to the crossbar with Phillips scrambling, it fell to Holmes, who had the simplest of tasks of heading into an empty net.
Frome huffed and puffed to get the equaliser, and they thought they got it in the 90th minute, through Wood again who headed another set piece home at the back post.
But it was skipper Jamie Whisken who had the last laugh, flicking a header home four minutes later from another free-kick to all but secure the three points for the Dorset based side.
Despite the result, there were many positives to take from the display and there’s an immediate chance to bounce back against Walton & Hersham on Tuesday and we’ll need another bumper crowd to push the boys over the line.

Agree with Harrison in that in parts, this was our best attacking display of the season, at other times we had to dig in and find away back into the game as Poole took over, but in general we once again competed very well and came from behind twice only to throw it all away the last few minutes. Defensively from crosses and corners we were an utter disaster. Just when we’d worked our socks off to earn a well deserved point and would have certainly been happy with that, we lapse again at the back and throw it all away. Heartbreaking really and something the team effort really didn’t deserve. Unfortunately we had to start the game without two…
