Frome Town 2 - 3 Dorchester Town

Updated: Apr 20

Frome Town battled bravely, but suffered a cruel late defeat at the hand of play-off chasers Dorchester Town.

In a game that had it all - two penalties, a red card and even goals for Frome, courtesy of Albie Hopkins and Sam Teale, the only missing piece was the final result their spirited performance richly deserved.

Danny Greaves made two changes from Friday’s fixture away at Swindon Supermarine, with Rex Mannings and James Ollis returning to the starting XI, and his side came flying out the blocks.

O’Loughlin was particularly energetic downthe left hand side. In the 19th minute, he charged down a clearance which fell to Ollis, who returned the favour with a smart through ball, which O’Loughlin raced onto but dragged his shot wide with the goal in sight.

Minutes later, Rex Mannings did excellently down the left hand side, before fizzing a low ball across the box that Ethan Vaughan met, but could only divert onto the post.

After surviving those early scares, the Magpies began to apply some pressure and were gifted a golden opportunity four minutes later, when Alex Monks unfortunately slipped in the box, catching the attacker, with the referee not hesitating to point to the spot.

Olaf Koszela calmly slotted the penalty into the bottom right corner - celebrations behind the goal were slightly over the top, you have thought they had just won the playoffs.

Regardless, the Robins didn’t flinch, and their persistence was finally rewarded in the 39th minute through Hopkins, who struck a perfect free-kick past the keeper and in off the post - ending the Robins nine-hour goal drought in style.

Just as it looked like the sides would go in level, disaster struck. A mix-up at the back between Sam Teale and Kyle Phillips led to an eventual collision with the Dorchester attacker and despite strong appeals of what look to be offside interference, leading to the foul, the referee pointed to the spot once again.

It was the same result for Koszela as this time he sent Phillips the wrong way as he switched sides from his earlier spot kick.

However, Frome weren’t going down without a fight, with nothing to lose, they put their all into the second half performance. They started the second 45 on the front foot, Vaughan put an excellent ball in from the right hand side in the 47th minute that reached Teale, who swung at the ball but completely missed it, before it rolled to O’Loughlin who’s scuffed effort was easily gathered by the keeper.

With time ticking away, it was Teale who made amends in the 72nd minute. Rising highest from a set piece, the captain powered home a header for his first goal of the season, levelling the game once again.

The turnaround was then so close to being completed six minutes later, when Hopkins dazzled with quick feet inside the box. He cut onto his left foot, but dragged his near post effort just a bit too much and it clipped the outside of the post.

As the hosts pushed forward in search of a winner, they left themselves vulnerable at the back and that’s when in the 89th minute, a clearance from O’Loughlin ricocheted off Brett Pitman, and back into his path. Pitman made no mistake with the effort, his looping effort beating Phillips.

Pitman wasn’t on the pitch for long though, as deep into injury time he made a cynical challenge on O’Loughlin who was looking to break forward, with the referee dishing out a straight red card, although there simply wasn’t enough time left in the game to make the man advantage count.

It was a bitter pill to swallow after such an inspired display, made worse by the mess left behind by a number of visiting supporters - discarded cups on the pitch, broken advertising boards and countless amounts of abuse towards staff members, but let’s not get into that too much.

With just two games remaining, it looks a near-impossible task for Greaves’ side to escape the drop - but next up is Plymouth Parkway on Monday, and the target, as always, remains three points.
