Frome put in a impressive performance despite a defeat against National
League South Side Weston-super-Mare.
The Robins started brightly in what was a very entertaining game, but the first clear chance fell to a Weston forward who brought out a fine save from Kyle Phillips in the 17th minute. In the 20th minute, Sam Teale connected perfectly with a fine header from a Reece Rusher corner that thundered against the crossbar. Frome played some quick football with Joe O’Loughlin, Reece Rusher and Caleb Summerfield linking up to create an opportunity for Taylor who fired over.
Weston were awarded a penalty after 34 minutes of the first half when the referee adjudged that Warren Maidment had fouled the Weston attacker and Reuben Reid converted.
At half-time Frome introduced Conrad Essifie-Conduah, Jon Davies and James Ollis and it was Ollis who came closest to levelling the scores after he got clear, only for the Weston goalkeeper Luke Purnell to judge the angles superbly and make a fine save
More chances for Frome came through the second half when Phillips smashed the ball up to Davies who excellently controlled and passed to Rusher whose shot got blocked. There was a penalty shout halfway through the half when Davies appeared to be held back in the box but the referee was unsighted.
Attempts were coming thick and fast with a Wood through ball to Ollis, who tried chipping the goalie but the keeper recovered well. Tyson Pollard launched a fine through-ball into Ollis, who got around the keeper but he recovered well once again.
With 10 minutes to go, Davies swung in a free kick and Teale connected with a header but it flew over.
The Robins put in a fine shift against quality opposition, restricting them to few chances, competed well in midfield and created problems for a Weston defence that had to be at their best to keep a clear sheet. With just one more friendly at North Leigh next Saturday to come, there are signs of the squad coming together and making preparations for the opening game of the Southern League Division One South season when we entertain Cribbs FC at home on Saturday 12th August at 3pm
