Second half goals from Marcus Mapstone and Matt Smith guided Frome to victory against Winchester City at Badgers Hill on Tuesday night.

The defender’s thumping header and a cool finish from midfielder Smith were ample reward for a dominant performance, securing three points that move the Robins up to second place in the Southern League Division One South.
Despite dominating long spells of the first half, Frome were unable to make the breakthrough in the opening 45 minutes
Smith came closest with a shot from the edge of the box that struck a post, and a sparkling team move involving Jon Davies and James Ollis ended with Davies sliding an effort just wide of goal.
The visitors looked dangerous on the counter-attack but as the half-time whistle blew, it was the Robins who had momentum behind them.
They finally had a reward for their dominance just minutes after the restart. Mapstone rose like the proverbial salmon to nod in a wicked set-piece delivery from Davies and send Badgers Hill barmy.
The visitors improved drastically following the introduction of substitute Simba Mlambo but stand-in ‘keeper Kyle Phillips was on hand to make a pair of decent stops to keep our lead intact.
As Winchester began to build momentum, Frome struck with a rapid counter-attack to seal the win. Substitute Kane Simpson won possession in his own half before driving forward and releasing Smith in space, and the Robins number 11 retained his composure to slot home.
The result means that Danny Greaves’ side are now unbeaten in their first nine games of the league season, and they now sit second in the league table despite playing less games than a number of their rivals due to cup commitments.
Frome return to cup action on Saturday as Poole Town visit Badgers Hill in the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy.
