Steve Jupp, BA11's Club Historian, previews the Robins' weekend fixture away at the Magpies!
Frome Town head south on Saturday as they resume their quest for league points with a visit to The Avenue Stadium, home of Dorchester Town.
Danny Greaves, who will take charge of the side for the 250th time, shuffled his pack in the midweek replay victory over Easington as the new faces continue to bed in and it will be intriguing to find out his next starting eleven as they bid to extend their impressive unbeaten run on the road which now stretches for over seven months.
Although having lost just once in the league this season, Dorchester, like the Robins, have struggled to score goals and went out of the FA Cup last week with a 2-0 defeat at Banbury of all places while their best result so far has to be that 1-0 triumph over Gloucester City.
Founder members of National League South (or Conference South as it was known then) in 2004, they spent a decade at Step Two with a best finish of eighth before relegation to the Southern Premier where they have plied their trade ever since and last season, clinched ninth place.
The Robins and The Magpies last met in a pre-season friendly just over a year ago in Dorset which finished in a 1-1 draw while the last competitive encounter was back in November 2019, a League Knock-Out Cup tie at Badgers Hill which saw Joe O’Loughlin on the scoresheet in another 1-1 draw, Frome eventually winning on penalties.
Past Southern League encounters
Home Away
2014-15 L 1-3 D 1-1
2015-16 L 0-3 D 0-0
2016-17 L 0-4 L 0-3
2017-18 W 3-1 W 4-1
2018-19 L 0-1 W 1-0
The two clubs met regularly in the Western League in the 50s, 60s and early 70s and on one dark away day in February 1959, The Robins suffered an 11-1 tanking with striker Dennis Cheney reportedly bagging a hat-trick in just ninety seconds, leading to the conclusion that goal celebrations must have been non-existent then. Frome have never suffered a bigger defeat since. Phew!
